Instruments

Here is a selection of my instruments. I don`t make"stock" models, or production runs; each instrument is unique, built to satisfy my abiding fascination with the performance of different combinations of tonewoods. I often have instruments in stock, built to my own specifications, but I particularly enjoy the challenge of designing and building an instrument to commission - one that will both reflect and enhance the musical style, technique and personality of it's owner, and, like it's owner, improve with age.

In common with an increasing number of luthiers, I am always on the lookout for viable, sustainable alternatives to the traditional exotic hardwoods like ebony, rosewood and mahogany, and have had particularly good results building with walnut, cherry and other fruitwoods.

Where an instrument listed is still available, I'll include a price, otherwise, new guitars start around £1100, depending on inlay work, cutaways, electronics, etc. Less for mandolins and bouzoukis.

Occasionally a used, or ex-demo model becomes available, and will be priced accordingly. In some cases I've shamelessly included a customer's comments about a particular guitar.

If you have your own dream guitar in mind, do get in touch - I'd be happy to talk it over with you. Please e-mail with any questions you might have.

Nylon-strung guitar. The owner of this instrument specified that it should be built entirely of wood from sustainable sources, and I was happy to oblige. Back, sides and neck are in Walnut, top in Spruce, and the fretboard is Plum. The endblocks, (inside), are Lime from a tree felled in his local park.Scale length inches, top bout 10.125 inches, lower bout 13.5 inches.

Owner's comment;" My investment in this guitar has given, and will continue to give me the deepest pleasure for many years to come. Working with Laurence, choosing every detail, has made my guitar so special and so personal".

Tele-style electric guitar. A real design classic, but with a little twist or two; the body is in recycled Zebrano, which is a heavy wood, allowing more sustain than normal for this kind of guitar. The high-output Razor pickups include a stacked, twin-coil at the bridge. With a 5-way "superswitch" this gives plenty of tone options, including in-, and out-of-phase, and some serious Twang.
